“Image resolution optimizations applied” in Merchant Center: what it means for your Shopify store
Google upscaled some of your product images so they pass its new 500 × 500 px rule. They are safe from disapproval, but here is why your best sellers still need real images.
You open Merchant Center, go to Needs attention → View history, and next to some products you see an orange warning: “Image resolution optimizations applied”. It sounds like an error. It isn't, but it does tell you something about your images that's worth acting on.
What the warning means
Google is raising the minimum product image size to 500 × 500 px, with enforcement from 31 January 2027. In its 2026 product data update, Google says it will also “begin optimizing some images that are smaller than 500 x 500”.
So this warning means: the image you sent was under 500 × 500 px, and Google made a larger version of it for you. Google says these optimized images meet the new rule and will prevent disapproval without any action from you.
Image resolution optimizations applied
- Your image was too small
- Google upscaled it for you
- Safe from disapproval, per Google
- You don't control how it looks
Image too small for upcoming enforcement
- Your image is too small
- Google did not fix it
- May be disapproved from 31 January 2027
- Fix these first
Do you need to do anything?
For the optimized products, nothing is urgent. Google has said they won't be disapproved. But there are three good reasons to replace them anyway:
- Google only fixes some images. Its help page says “in some cases” and gives no list. The products next to the optimized ones may not get the same treatment.
- You don't see the result. Google upscales the image, but you can't preview or choose the version shoppers see in your ads.
- Your store still shows the small photo. Google's fix only lives inside Google. Your Shopify product page, and any other channel that pulls the same file from Shopify, still show the original small image.
Google also says how to undo it: submit a new image larger than 500 × 500 px in your product data, and it replaces the optimized one.
What to fix first
- Products marked “Image too small for upcoming enforcement”. These are not fixed by Google and are at risk on 31 January 2027.
- Your best sellers with “Image resolution optimizations applied”. These earn the most, so they deserve a sharp image you chose.
- The rest of the optimized products, when you have time.
How to get the list
From Google's “Image too small” help page:
- In Merchant Center, open Products → Needs attention.
- Click View history and look at the orange warnings on the right.
- Click View fix, then Download impacted products for a CSV.
That list only shows what Google has already processed. To see every small image in your Shopify store, including gallery and variant photos, scan the store itself.
How to replace the images
The best fix is always the original, larger photo: from your own files, your photographer, or the supplier. Google itself advises against submitting scaled-up thumbnails.
When the original is gone, upscale what you have to at least 800 px on the short side, not exactly 500. PixPass does this in your browser and gives you a ZIP plus a CSV that maps each file to its product. Then upload the new image in Shopify, put it in the same position, re-assign it to its variant if needed, and delete the old one. Changes can take 24 to 72 hours to show in Merchant Center.
